I really liked using google plus with my classmates. It is almost like a version of Facebook. You can post pictures, create a profile , etc. Though this was different this Facebook. The reason as to why it was different is because my "timeline" was not filled with meaningless post. It was an interesting way to be involved with my classmates.

I never knew all the things one can do on google drive. I found it a bit hard at first, but once I got a hang of it i found pretty cool. It is very useful for group projects. Your group can edit and view each others work. The one thing that I feel disappointed in is that now that the class is just about over I was just getting the hang of it.

APA format has been a love and hate relationship. I enjoy learning to write in this format but for some reason I feel like a lot of stuff gets added on all the time. There are to many " specific ways" to do it. It seems like everyone has their versions of what APA style really is. One semester I am doing  APA correctly the next I am losing points for an italicize tile that was forgotten or tedious grammar mistakes that seem minuscule.

 

 



Second post on Death

 This subject is touchy for me.  How do I feel about death ? Well i will start by saying I see my self living a long life.  I believe that everything has an expiration date. That includes humans. Since the losses of my grandmother the reality has hit . That the longer you live the more you will experience death.  One has a greater appreciation for  life when one knows about death.

This word was unfamiliar to me growing up.  I really never thought about death until my grandmother from my mom's side passed away. I was 18 years old and I did not know how to process it. It was the first time that a loss of a person impacted my whole family. We had heard of people passing away but never close to us. For years my parents had tried to bring my grandmother to the U.S. and in 2009 that wish had come true. Only to have her pass away in front of the Miami airport. At that point I closed myself off and went along with the funeral preparations.  I had never seen so many people cry. I had never seen my mother in so much distress. To be completely honest I have yet to accept the death. Since I didn’t see the funeral because my mother send the body back to Mexico to be properly buried there is like she never passed away.

 

 

 

 

I have yet to return to Mexico and frankly I do not think I would. At least not to my parents’ hometown. Her house was the first house we would arrive to. Going back would have to force me to accept it. The same for my father's mother who died a few years later. I guess when it comes to death I am not so accepting.

For this post I chose to write about the poem Cinderella, by Anne Sexton.  I have always been a fanatic of the Cinderella stories. Anne Sexton talks about myths in this poem.  She makes a comparison to myth through the stories rags to riches. Sexton's final stanza suggestion about the was fairy tales end is that  main character in the story always ends up living happily ever after and the villains get what is coming to them. Cinderella is a recognizable legend. Most know about the evil stepmother and stepsisters. How the prince throws a ball to find his bride. How Cinderella is not allow to go and in some miracle she is dressed in the most beautiful dress at the ball. The princes falls in love, but she must run by the strike of mid night.  All that is left is her slipper. The prince goes in search of his mystery love. Finds her and marries her. Very beautiful story but a myth.

Emily Dickinson is a very interesting person to me. She spent most of her life in her family home. In some of her poetry you can sense her loneliness.  When I was reading about her the book stated that she never married. There are clues that she was romantically involved with someone. There is a poem she wrote called I'm Nobody! Who are you?  Could she have been talking about her mystery man?  Very interesting poet, goes to show that some of us are naturally talented.

One of the greatest myth of my life I could say is growing up Catholic.  As a young child I was taught that if I misbehaved I would go to hell . I was taught only to fear God and what could happen to me if I lied, cheated, or stole. Even as a child I struggled with understanding why church was so important to adult if all they did was fear God. I never went to church only on special occasions. As a teenage I started to feel an overwhelming feeling to understand God and who he really was. A friend invited me to go to her Christian church one day and I fell in love.  Then my family started to prohibit to go with her. They told me that we were "Catholic" and that "Catholic's" did not bounce from church to church and I was not allowed to change religions. Sadden by the disapproval I renounced my love.

 

In 2012, I was reunited with my long lost love, I found myself in front of a preacher accepting Jesus into my heart.  It took  22 years to finally satisfy my search in my beliefs. Today I am head of a household in where my 3 year old knows that God loves her and is merciful. A household that prays together.

I am will happy to write this post. For my wiki article I am writing about The Negro Speaks of Rivers.  The main symbol is this poem is rivers. The rivers in Langston Hughes poem can be interpret as an extension of heritage and cultural awareness. He refers to the rivers to the black community.  He describes the rivers ancient and wise.   Hughes captivates and paints a picture of the rivers as being majestic. He uses    descriptions of the rivers going from muddy and dusky to golden.  In essences describing African Americans as slaves and then becoming golden once they obtained their freedom.

A symbol in my life is a diamond cross necklace.  I did not learn about God until I was an adult.  On my 24^th birthday I was given a diamond cross. I am very careful and rarely wear it due to the fear of losing it or breaking. That is how important it is. The cross symbolizes Jesus has rose and not dead. On my necklace the cross is covered in diamonds. It is shinny just like me and how God’s love has restored me. The chain is very delicate and thin. The necklace symbolizes me and my faith. I am the delicate thin chain that holds the shiny diamond cross. I am a thin delicate woman that holds the love of God in my heart that makes me shine like a diamond.

Some ones Symbol

As a mother of a beautiful full of life 3 year old , one of the things I notices is what she attaches herself to.  Since my daughter Natalie was a baby baby (she is still a baby but says she is a big girl now) she has attached herself to this big red brownish blanket.  This blanket is not a normal size blankie .  The blanket is more like a dang comforter but never lets it go! She eats with it, sleeps with it , watches TV with it, and takes it to daycare too! What could she possibly see in that blanket? Then the day came when that question was answered by my 3 year old. I was in such a hurry to get her to school that I forgot to bring the blankie aka comforter. She nearly had a heart attack! She said “ mommy my blankie! Go back for my blankie!”  I said “no Natalie come on, why do you need that huge thing?” Her response was priceless” because it helps me stay safe.” Objects can symbolize different things to many people in this case of a 3 year old  girl it meant safety.

I love reading poetry because I love the symbolic meaning.  In The Negro Spoke of river has a deep rich meaning to it .

 

 

I’ve known rivers:
I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the  
     flow of human blood in human veins.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln
     went down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy
     bosom turn all golden in the sunset.

I’ve known rivers:

There is history in this poem. Metaphorcal meaning , symbolic meaning. I think the reason why I  like this poem, and I have mention it before in other post is the similes. Similes are a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid . " My Soul has grown deep like the rivers", "I've known rivers

  ancient as the world."  Such rich comparisons.

 For this post I will link two stories that I can sense  psychological criticism.

In the story of revelations, Ms. Turnip is portrayed with such Narcissistic personality. She is preoccupied with personal adequacy, power , prestige and vanity, mentally unable to see the destructive damage she causing to herself and to others in the process. She is a very interesting character and I find it genius the way the author uses this type of a psychological criticism to portray this character.


The second story that stands out to me is the Fall of the House of Usher. Roderick is psychologically profiled as a character with mental disorders. Depression is the mental disorder that is emphasized. He is in a states of a  depressed mood.  This mood can make him feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, helpless, worthless,guilty, irritable, ashamed or restless.


Roderick  loses interest in activities that were once pleasurable, has problems concentrating, remembering details or making decisions, and may contemplate, attempt or commit suicide. Just the feel of the psychology behind this character.

I had to really research this topic. Gender criticism is an approach that examines how sexual identity influences the creation and reception of literary works. In literacy, males are portray as masculinist and females are viewed demeaning and oppressed. Gender Criticism has influence women to make a movement. Feminist have fought this view of gender criticism. They have tried to correct these assumptions of women being demeaning and oppressed in literacy.  Some have question the influence of sexual identity in text. Like how women are perceived in images of imaginative literature. Thus, trying to achieve literacy equality.

For this post I will be breaking down a bit more in depth the symbolic meaning of this  poem.  This poem has metaphorical verses, and musical as well as similes.

The “rivers” are use as metaphors. Rivers are long and can extend for miles. The way rivers are used as metaphors are used is through the extension of the black community. The deep roots of what has made black people so wise. 

In some of the research that I have done I found out that the poem is describe to have a musical component. It is viewed musical because Hughes repeats “I’ve known of Rivers.” Just like in a song the chorus is repeated. This correlates with Hughes verse “I’ve known of rivers” this is the chorus for The negro Spoke of Rivers .

The Negro Speaks of Rivers has great similes. Similes are some of my favorite things in writing. I love the figure of speech involving the comparison. One of the similes that stands out to me is when he uses a simile to compare the age of the rivers to the age of the Earth: "ancient as the world."

As I begin the research for my wiki article  I have realize that I am so into the symbolism of this poem.

The rivers are the main symbolism. The rivers are viewed as a metaphor for the black community. James Mercer Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist. During an era where segregation and racism was still extrusive.  This poem was written when he was still in high school. I feel like the rivers symbolize the connection of the heritage of African Americans and the adversities that they faced. To me is like he is speaking of the connections of generations in the black community.

The theme of " the fall of the house of usher"

The fall of the house of usher is a  great story. The fall of usher can have so many themes. It can have a theme of madness ,fear, and isolation.  The madness drives character Rodrick to his illness and believes the family is hunted by this house in a supernatural way. The fear seems to play a key factor in this story. Rodrick seems to fear "fear" itself. Could fear be the responsible for  some deaths in this story?  As for isolation, the Usher family isolates themselves . They have excluded themselves from the outside world.  Their isolation  has made them develop their own reality that would be strange to an outsider.

   What my pockets carry

As a medical assisting/ Surgical cooridnator I have the  deepest pockest. For five days a week I wear scrubs. Now theses scrubs are bright and colorful but what is awesome about them is that they have some good pockets.  I wake up at 6 am and slap these bad boys on. One thing about me is that 90 % of the time I do not carry a  purse. I just hate feeling like I have to drag something around to but my stuff in.
In these pockets I carry my keys. Very important keys to my office, car and house. My phone pretty much lives in my left pocket.Through out the day my pockets accumulate all kinds of treasures. They collect notes , pens, and at times unusual objects end up in my pockets. At the end of the day when my day is ready to come to an end. I take every thing out on my night stand. As I dump all the things out my pockets I evaluate all the important notes, decide if the pen or pens are worth putting in my new pockets for the next day and what is just simply garbage.  You can say I pretty much work out of my pockets.

In the short story of the yellow wallpaper, the setting is set in an era where mental illness were a premature exploration. It seems that in this era the oppression of women was greatly alive.  I relate the setting to a time period because the husband reactions to his wife emotions. They seem unfamiliar to  him .  This  was a  time period where  women were  oppressed and a form of breaking free was seen as depression. Rather than embracing it they were shut from the world.

In the story of  the Fall of the  house of usher ,  one of the characters is Roderick usher.  He is described as a gloomy , nervous agitated person. He faces an acute bodily illness , which does not help facing the death of his sister .  This character is perceived as  a hypochondria . He is set to take on a role as a sickly individual because of   his family history. A tragic  story of depression and gloominess. Rodrick usher is chain to his mindset of living in misery.

The Wiki article that I chose is Negro speaks of rivers. I want to focus on the style and tone of the author.

At this time the wiki article can use more resources . It does not have a style and tone. When I first read the poem I enjoyed it. I got the sense of connection with the earth. The author projects lots of feeling and depth. The reason I want to focus on the style and tone is because I like the way the author chose to write his poem . How he uses his arrangement of words to paint a picture and capture the feeling of the connection with the rivers . I am still trying to figure out the tone of this poem but so far I like were I am headed with this.

My favorite movie (Protagonist)

 I love movies. You can say I am a bit of a movie junkie, but my favorite movie of all time is the Selena movie. The protagonist is actor Jenifer Lopez. Interesting enough it is said that this movie put Ms. Lopez on the map. Jenifer Lopez spends time to live with the family and really takes the time to study Selena's mannerism. The movie is a biography of Selena Quintanilla, a famous tejano music artist. Jenifer Lopez portrays Selena very well. This Music drama takes you into the artist life. From her childhood dreams, to the struggle of breaking through as a woman tejano singer . Eventually Selena becomes the first Latin woman to do a crossover album of English and Spanish music. Shorten from her career Selena was killed by the president of her fan club. Jenifer Lopez not only portrays the singer very well, but gives Selena's fans a chance to remember her as the great singer she was.
